Great for just messing around or maybe getting some inspiration. Really handy with making hip hop hihat patterns.Īlt + R - Brings up the Randomizer tool. ((It's not as useful as the octave.))Īlt + U - Brings up the Chopper tool that lets you split notes in multiples. Shift + Up/Down - Holding Shift and pressing the up or down arrow is the default hotkey to transpose a selection up or down a half step. ((This is my #1 time-saving tip.))Ĭtrl + Up/Down - Holding Ctrl and pressing the up or down arrow is the default hotkey to transpose a selection up or down an octave. You can even duplicate a bunch of patterns very quickly in the Playlist view by doing this. Trap music using soft clipping even on the mastering stage to get that gritty kick/bass colliding distortion.Ĭtrl + B - Instead of Copying and Pasting a bunch of times, you can make a simple bassline by just selecting one note and holding this down. Virtual Riot has shown this a few times for bass music where the clipping sounds gnarly in a good way on the master. But there are ways to get that sound while retaining a below 0dB master (soft clipping, hard clipping, clipping limiters, etc). Although clipping and peaks that exceed 0dB can sound good for certain genres. Peaks will hit above 0 the more you compress an MP3, so it’s good to stick a true peak limiter and master to anything below 0dB (-0.1 to -1.5dB output maximum). Once you render to MP3 those ISPs will stick out and cause slight distortions when those hit their peaks.

You’ll have +1 to +5dB ISPs if you don’t use a true peak limiter after Maximus (something free like Limiter No 6 is great for this). Maximus is a great plugin for mastering/limiting/compression/saturation/stereo band splitting, BUT when used for mastering it will not catch ISPs (intersample peaks).
Highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t. It has a ton of presets and can achieve more specific sounds than most other free reverb plugins. Although it’s a stock plugin, I don’t think a whole lot of people use it that much. Typically on more high energy, groovy songs, I’ll layer a giant clap on top of my snare to make it a “big moment” in the mix.Īlso, I like to add a subtle fx sweep leading into the clap/snare to add more energy.įruity convolver. It took me so long until I started layering claps and snares.
I then use this playlist to hold the notes I’ve been taking. I like to make one of my playlist tracks (I usually use track 10 as my dummy track) a different color than the rest, usually solid black so that it stands out from the rest. Also, put a note at a velocity of 0 in the pattern so that it holds its place. Take notes in your project by using an unnamed pattern, renaming it to your note, and putting it in the playlist where you’d like to make the note about. Tip: (I actually learned this from someone else on Reddit, but took it a step further)
